Special Education services provide comprehensive educational programs for students with disabilities in the School District of Mellen. Guaranteed by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), FAPE is defined as an educational program that is individualized to a specific child, designed to meet that child's unique needs, and from which the child receives educational benefit. To provide FAPE, schools must provide students with an “… education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.”[ 20 U.S.C. §1400(c)(5)(A)(i) Often children who are having problems in school may need extra help through special education. Special education is for children who have a disability. School districts must follow certain procedures to decide if a child is eligible for special education. These procedures are written in state and federal laws. The special education laws and procedures are complicated and can be hard to understand. Dear Members of the Mellen Community,
Welcome to Mellen Public School Special Education Website! My name is Lisa Seiffert, Director of Special Education and high school cross-categorical teacher. I started my first teaching job in the Mellen School District in 1982. I, truly, don’t have any idea where the years have gone! Mellen is a wonderful, caring community where its children have an opportunity to gain the finest education anywhere. The students are what make this a great place to be! It is the community that I consider “home”. I’m proud to be a Granite Digger!
I received my Bachelor of Science in Special Education and General Education from Northern Michigan University in 1982. Then in 2005, I received my Masters in Education Administration – Director of Special Education/Pupil Services from UW-Superior.
I am married and the mother of two adult daughters and an adult stepson. I am, also, the very proud grandmother of Cayden!! My husband, Bruce, and I reside in the Drummond area. I enjoy flower gardening, photography and traveling!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lisa Seiffert
